The St. Johns River is the longest river in Florida and one of few rivers in the U.S. that flows north. The river has been a home and focal point throughout time. Many groups have lived on the river, spanning from the Paleoindians to Spanish settlers to retirees. The river was the subject of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings' books and Harriet Beecher Stowe's letters home. The St. John's River feeds into and forms multiple lakes in Florida. Unfortunately, over the past century the river has suffered severe pollution and was on the list of America's Ten Most Endangered Rivers in 2008.
